The Kanohi Akaku was a type of Kanohi mask with the power of X-Ray Vision. The Great Akaku allowed its user to see through opaque objects. Many Great Akaku were fitted with an assemblage of three lenses over the right eye that provided telescopic vision, which complemented the mask's power. Akaku could be created from Kanoka disks with the regeneration and teleport powers. The Akaku Nuva was a more powerful version of the Akaku.

Akaku were created from Kanoka disks with the regeneration and teleport powers.4
Telescopic vision was built into the Akaku, even powerless ones worn by Matoran.5 This telescoping eye was a mechanical enhancement that allowed the user to see better, since vision was important to how the mask was used.6
Users of the Akaku were able to control how many layers of material they saw through.7
Telescopic vision was not a power of the Akaku, it was a result of the telescopic lens.8
Other Information
- Greg Farshtey didn't see much difference in power level between the Great Ruru and Akaku.9
- Originally, the Kanohi Akaku was referred to as the Mask of Vision and had multiple vision-related powers, but this was scaled back as the release of the sets approached. This is why the Akaku has thermal vision in the first comic which is never used again.10
