Story Year 2007

Aftermath of Events on Voya Nui

  • Takanuva remains in Metru Nui, guarding the city.1
  • Frostelus are spotted near Metru Nui. Takanuva clashes with them on more than one occasion.2
  • Takanuva is guarding Metru Nui.3
  • Takanuva is likely living in the Coliseum because it's relatively intact.4
  • Vakama is in possession of the Mask of Time.5, 6
  • Makuta is the only one who knows Vakama has the Vahi, and he doesn't go after it because he knows Vakama would destroy it.7
  • The Dark Hunter Vengeance is active and is convinced that Makuta is still alive, despite reports to the contrary. He will not rest until he has personally killed the master of shadows.8
  • Given recent events on Voya Nui, the Order of Mata Nui considers seeking out the location of Artakha again for aid.9
  • Word from Voya Nui reaches the Order of Mata Nui which suggests that Teridax, although his armor was shattered, did not die, and that his energy has yet to dissipate.10 Given recent events on Voya Nui, the Order of Mata Nui suspects that Makuta was not really defeated by Takanuva, but survived and simply allowed the Toa to think that they had won. They think he may be trying to carry out some grand scheme involving the Mask of Life.11 They believe that his goal is to use the Mask of Life to attain ultimate power somehow, and that his first step will be to find a new host body.10
  • Now that the Matoran have returned to Metru Nui, the island of Mata Nui remains abandoned. The Order of Mata Nui believes that it is vitally important that none be allowed to take up residence on Mata Nui again. The Order is also determined to find a way to unleash the Bohrok again in order to return the island to its original state. The Order believes Mata Nui will be expecting this when he wakes up.11
  • The Order of Mata Nui is preparing for the very real possibility that they may have to reveal themselves to prevent a disaster.12
  • Ehlek's species hasn't been used to fight the Brotherhood of Makuta.13
  • No beings in the Matoran universe know of the Great Spirit Mata Nui's location.14
  • Artakha is very aware of the current state of the universe.15
  • All Toa have at least heard of Artakha.16
  • Recently, Xia tests one of its weapons by blasting a nearby island into dust so that it would not block an approach to their own. No intelligent people are living on the island at the time, although a number of rare types of Rahi are wiped out.17
  • Business remains brisk on Xia as both the Dark Hunters and the Brotherhood of Makuta stock up on weapons for their ongoing conflict.17
  • The central water source on Zakaz is declared a free zone. The various warring factions are allowed to travel there and back in peace. Most make an effort to avoid encountering each other. It is unclear how long this fragile arrangement will last.18
  • The Order of Mata Nui spots Dark Hunter watercraft in the waters around Zakaz. This suggests that the Dark Hunters expect the Piraka to return to Zakaz with the Ignika, and that they are planning an ambush.18
  • Axonn resides on Voya Nui with the Matoran. It is believed that he is aware that if the Kanohi Ignika is used to save the life of Mata Nui, all life on Voya Nui may be destroyed.19
  • Some repair work is being done in Ko-Metru, but Le-Metru is currently being given priority because of the need to get the transport system running again.20
  • Thanks to the extreme industriousness of the Le-Matoran, they have already rebuilt much of Le-Metru.20
  • The Great Temple is still in the process of being rebuilt after the damage caused by Vakama as a Toa Hordika.20
  • The Onu-Matoran are hard at work rebuilding the Great Archives, but it will still take a great deal of time to complete the work.20
  • For some weeks, the ground around the Coliseum has shown signs of upheaval, cracking and buckling, and sometimes collapsing completely. The Turaga believe it is connected to the crisis involving Mata Nui.20
  • Shadow Stealer is currently making his way back to the Dark Hunter base on Odina, defeating Toa and Dark Hunters as he goes.21
  • Recently as of story year 2007 The Dark Hunter "Devastator" is very active. The Shadowed One dispatches him to a nearby island to collect payment owed the Dark Hunters by the inhabitants. With luck, there will still be an island in existence when he is done.22
  • The Dark Hunter-Brotherhood of Makuta War remains a stalemate, largely because the Brotherhood is unwilling to devote its full attention to the struggle.23
  • Tahtorak and Kardas battle while the Ignika is underwater.24
  • Kardas fights Tahtorak.25
  • Tahtorak is definitely larger than Kardas, but the latter makes use of his ranged attack.26
  • If Tahtorak gets close to Kardas he has the edge due to his size. However, Kardas can fire concussive force from a distance so he can stay farther away as Tahtorak doesn't have a ranged attack.27
  • Teridax is floating on Voya Nui.28
  • The Brotherhood of Makuta is carrying forward Teridax's plans.29
  • The Order of Mata Nui might be able to disrupt the Brotherhood of Makuta's plan, but they don't know what it is.30
  • Dume and Teridax may have heard of the "world that feeds the world", but don't know much about it.31
  • Umbra has recovered.32

The Mask of Life is Found in Mahri Nui

  • The waters erode the Ignika but they don't mutate it.33
  • The Ignika erodes due to exposure to mutagen.34
  • The Ignika leaks life energy into the sea just as the Vahi leaked time energy when damaged.35
  • By the time the Ignika realizes the water is damaging it, it's too late.36
  • The Mask of Life is getting damaged by the water, not mutating.37
  • The Kanohi Ignika drifts down to the sunken city of Mahri Nui in the vicinity of the Pit. It is found by Matoran.38, 39
  • Kyrehx is the first Matoran in Mahri Nui to come into contact with the Ignika. As a result of her interaction with the mask, she finds that plant life spontaneously grows anywhere she goes which reacts violently to being uprooted.40
  • Kyrehx passes the Ignika on to Dekar, and her curse stops.40

The Toa Inika Journey Down the Cord

  • Vezon's goal is to get the Ignika back.41
  • Zyglak haven't really been exposed to mutagen. Some live in the old Pit where exposure is minimal, the rest are in the cord where there's no water.42
  • The Toa Inika journey through an underground passageway to reach Mahri Nui.43
  • Meanwhile, the Toa Nuva are returning to Metru Nui.43
  • Jaller leads the Toa Inika through the Cord in an effort to retrieve the Ignika. They battle Zyglak44 and Makuta along the way.45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52 The Toa Inika journey down through the Cord to reach Mahri Nui.53
  • Vezon goes down the spiraling stone tunnel and ends up among Zyglak.54
  • Vezon attempts to pursue the Toa Inika to Mahri Nui and is defeated a second time.55
  • Vezon attempts to kill the Toa Inika a second time.54
  • The Toa Inika encounter Zyglak in the cord leading to Mahri Nui and barely escape with their lives.56
  • The Inika face probably 40 or so zyglak.57
  • Vezon attempts to trade the Toa Inika's lives to the Zyglak in exchange for his own, though it does not work.54
  • The Toa Inika escape from the zyglak.44
  • Vezon is last seen being carried off by the murderous Zyglak.55
  • Not so long before FoF Vezon spends many days as a captive of the Zyglak.58
  • Jaller burns the Spear of Fusion to ashes.59
  • Karzahni trails the Toa Inika into the Pit, staying far enough behind to remain unnoticed.60
  • Along the way, Matoro uses his mask power to unleash his spirit and scout ahead.50
  • Teridax, not wanting the Toa to realize that he is not really after the Mask of Life but instead wants to manipulate how the Toa get it, behaves as they would expect him to. He possesses the body of Toa Inika Matoro to sow confusion and doubt among them.61
  • While Matoro's body is vacant, Makuta possesses it and attempts to manipulate the Toa Inika into serving his ends.62, 50 Makuta Teridax briefly possesses Matoro's body during a time when the Toa's spirit is absent. He attempts to corrupt the Toa.63
  • Makuta steals the Kanohi Elda from Hahli while he is in possession of Matoro's body.64
  • Hewkii is the first to realize that Makuta has taken over possession of Matoro's body.46 When Makuta Teridax possesses Matoro's body, Hewkii is the first to notice that something is seriously wrong.65
  • Eventually, Makuta is driven out of Matoro's body, and Matoro is restored to his true body.50 The Toa discover the truth and force Makuta Teridax to leave Matoro's body by threatening to destroy it. Matoro's spirit then returns to his own body.63 Teridax allows himself to be forced out of Matoro's body.61

The Barraki Seek the Mask of Life

  • Reysa dies.66
  • A giant squid kills Reysa.67
  • The Barraki are both smart and evil. They are aware of the Ignika's curses, but they don't believe it can do anything to them that hasn't already been done. They see the mask as the key to their freedom and a return to power and they are willing to bear a curse to do that. They don't necessarily believe when others say it's needed to save the life of Mata Nui.68
  • The Barraki are the only warlords in the Pit.69
  • The Barraki see no point in destroying Mahri Nui. The Matoran have nothing they need, so they don't see a reason to kill them. Killing them would be a potential waste of resources because they may have a use for them in the future.70
  • When the Ignika drifts down into the region, Takadox decides to end his seclusion and join in the hunt for it.71
  • The Barraki attempt to claim the Ignika.72 When the Mask of Life drifts down into the ocean, the Barraki plan to seize it as a means of escape from the Pit.73 Pridak leads the search for the Mask of Life.74 The Barraki search for the Mask of Life.43 The Barraki are sure that the Mask of Life is the one thing that can turn them into water-breathers again, which would be the first step toward reclaiming the kingdoms they lost 80,000 years before.75
  • One of Carapar's claws is detached in order for him to carry a squid launcher.76
  • Carapar likely leaves one of his claws in his lair.77
  • Dekar is the second Matoran to come into possession of the Kanohi Ignika. By touching the mask, Dekar is cursed such that he cannot cause a fatal injury to anything he fights.78
  • The Mask of Life gives Dekar a vision of the Barraki fighting while he is holding it.79, 80
  • Dekar's vision begins the moment he touches the Ignika.81
  • The vision is a piece of the future.82
  • Dekar's curse is that he can't kill or wound anything while he possesses the Ignika.83
  • Trapped in the Pit, Brutaka offers to ally with the Barraki to claim the Ignika. The Barraki refuse him, and he is last seen being dragged off by one of Kalmah's giant squid.84, 85
  • Brutaka is unaware that Voya Nui is right above him.86
  • Brutaka has mutated, as evidenced by his ability to breathe.87
  • The Barraki want to lose Brutaka because they don't want to be subordinate to him.88
  • Brutaka doesn't have the presence of mind to teleport the squid away.89
  • The Barraki don't care what happens to Brutaka, as he is of no use to them. They're fine if he survives and they don't care if he doesn't.90
  • Once Karzahni enters the black waters, he is mutated and becomes disoriented. He loses track of the Toa and wanders for some time.60
  • Karzahni alters and trains the flightless Manutri birds of Voya Nui into a fighting force. He outfits them with squid launchers and Cordak blasters scavenged from the Barraki weapons caves and plans to unleash them on Toa and Barraki alike.91
  • Lesovikk learns from Toa Krakua that Karzahni is planning an attack on the underwater city of Mahri Nui, backed by the Zyglak. Krakua tells him that if Karzahni is defeated, someone will come to take him away. Seeing the chance to avenge himself on two of his oldest enemies, he ceases his wanderings and travels to Mahri Nui for a final confrontation.92, 93
  • Lesovikk has not completed his destiny.94, 95
  • Defilak recalls fragmentary memories of Turaga Jovan.96
  • Defilak leads an expedition into the Pit and is among those captured by Pridak.97 Defilak leads an expedition down the Black Water which is wrecked by Pridak and his legion of Takea sharks.98
  • Sarda accompanies Defilak on his exploratory mission into the Pit.99
  • Pridak captures Defilak, Sarda, and Idris and imprisons them in a sea cave in an effort to discover the Ignika's location.100, 101
  • Pridak grows angry with the Matoran's refusal to give him information. He hurls Sarda out of the cave into the midst of a school of hungry Takea, presuming him dead.101, 100, 99
  • Sarda resigns himself to his demise when, unknown to Pridak, Lesovikk comes to his rescue. Riding his mechanical sea sled and wielding his sword, Lesovikk slams into the middle of the school of Takea, then sweeps them away the scattered Takea with a waterspout.101, 100, 99
  • After the battle, Sarda is unable to recognize Lesovikk, although Lesovikk strikes him as strangely familiar. Lesovikk on the other hand recognizes Sarda at once. Sarda begs him to help his friends in the cave, but Lesovikk is reluctant, replying that someone once told him that knowledge is a sharper weapon than a sword. The saying sparks Sarda's memory enough that, to his amazement, he suddenly remembers Lesovikk by name. Lesovikk begins to relate his story.101
  • The wandering Karzahni happens to see Sarda and Lesovikk. He recognizes neither but decides that the Toa is a threat; moreover he is in need of a fight to prepare himself for his conquest of the universe. He ambushes Lesovikk by hurling one of his burning chains at him. As Lesovikk is yanked off his feet in shock and anguish, Sarda charges at Karzahni.60
  • Lesovikk struggles to break free of Karzahni's chains while his captor gloats over him. Lesovikk defiantly tells Karzahni about his failed attempts to rescue his friends from his realm, but Karzahni retorts that Lesovikk is accustomed to failure. In an outburst Sarda says that he remembers Lesovikk's past exploits and his heroism. Being called a hero moves Lesovikk, and he summons renewed strength. Flexing his muscles, he snaps free of Karzahni's chain. Exhausted but fierce, he faces the astonished Karzahni, primed for battle.102
  • Deciding to look for easier prey, Karzahni attacks Sarda with his mask power, using it to show him a horrifying version of the day Mahri Nui sank in which none of the Matoran survive.103
  • Lesovikk strikes Karzahni dead-on with a mini-cyclone from his sword, breaking his concentration, but Sarda has passed out on the ocean floor from shock. Karzahni leaves Lesovikk to help Sarda while he makes his escape. Lesovikk sees that Sarda's bubble is gone and that he is drowning.103
  • Lesovikk quickly rushes Sarda to a nearby free-floating air bubble. To his amazement, Sarda starts gasping for air but then suddenly seems as if he is drowning again, this time in air. Lesovikk notices that the waters of the Pit are mutating Sarda, turning him into a water-breather. Lesovikk pulls him back out, and Sarda stops spasming.104
  • Finishing his story, Lesovikk tells Sarda about the mission in which his team had been killed and how he had become a wanderer. Sarda suggests that stopping Karzahni from allying with the Barraki could atone for his past mistakes. Lesovikk decides that Karzahni must be destroyed to prevent from him from returning to his realm and continuing to menace Matoran there.104

A Giant Venom Eel Attacks

  • The Kanohi Ignika evolves a venom eel to a length of 300 feet.105
  • The giant venom eel attacks the Barraki, Mahri Nui, and the Toa Mahri.105
  • Takadox tries to hypnotize a 300-foot-long venom eel.71
  • Pridak brings Defilak to the Pillars of Salt, where both witness the appearance of a 300-foot venom eel from that vantage point.106
  • Ehlek leads his army against Mahri Nui, only to be stopped by order of Pridak.107
  • Carapar and his army occupy the Fields of Air in order to compel the Matoran to hand over the Ignika.76 Carapar briefly occupies the fields of air with an army of keras crabs.108
  • Mahri Nui is on alert for Barraki attacks.43
  • The Ignika shows signs of damage or even being on the verge of self-destruction.109
  • Convinced the mask is evil, Dekar attempts to destroy it, but the Barraki steal it first.78 Dekar finds the Mask of Life and runs off with it, intending to destroy it. However, the Barraki eventually take the mask away from him.110
  • Dekar takes the Ignika to sea caves not on Mahri Rock.111
  • The 300-foot venom eel hears the Toa Inika fighting the Zyglak in the stone cord.112

The Mask of Life Transforms the Toa Inika into the Toa Mahri

  • The Kanohi Ignika arrived near Mahri Nui a day or so ago.113
  • Gadunka hasn't been formed yet.114
  • Brutaka is the most recent being to be sent to the Pit.115
  • At this point, the only mutation Brutaka has is his ability to breathe underwater.116
  • Brutaka can no longer breathe air.117
  • Brutaka is technically no longer an Order of Mata Nui member.118
  • Karzahni is travelling to the Pit from his realm.119
  • The Toa Nuva are on their way to Metru Nui.120
  • Kardas hasn't battled Tahtorak yet.121
  • Gadunka exists, but is not enlarged.122
  • The Matoran have only been back on Metru Nui for a few weeks.123
  • The Barraki seize the Ignika, believing that its power can transform them into their former air-breathing selves and allow them to reclaim their kingdoms.38, 39, 109
  • Pridak gets his claws on the Ignika, ignoring its legendary curse, believing that no curse could be worse than his current situation.100
  • The Toa Inika reach the end of the Cord and Mahri Nui. As they enter the water, and just when the Ignika is captured by the Barraki,109 a blinding burst of energy from the Ignika transforms them into the aquatic Toa Mahri.45, 46, 47, 48, 50, 51, 124, 52 The Toa Inika travel to the Pit in search of the Mask of Life. The mask is in danger at the time, having been seized by the evil Barraki. It reaches out with its power and transforms the Toa Inika, changing their masks, armor, and weapons and making them water-breathers. Now they are ready to fight for the fate of the universe in the depths of the Pit.125
  • The light has no connection to Pridak's curse.126
  • The light isn't a manifestation of a curse.127
  • The light is a cry for help, in a sense.128
  • The light is only visible underwater.129
  • When the power of the Mask of Life strikes the six Toa Inika, it transforms them into the undersea warriors known as Toa Mahri. They are now able to breathe water only.130
  • The Ignika transforms Dekar into a new version of Hydraxon, erasing his memory in the process. Believing himself to be the original Hydraxon, he sets out to recapture all the escapees of the Pit.78, 131 When the Mask of Life needs a new warrior, it transforms Dekar into a duplicate of Hydraxon. This new Hydraxon has the memories of the old and has no idea he was once a Matoran.132
  • The Mask of Life transforms Dekar into a new Hydraxon. Hydraxon believes that everyone in the Pit, including the Toa Mahri, is an escaped prisoner who must be recaptured. The new Hydraxon has all the memories and skills of the old one but does not remember that he was ever Dekar.133
  • Hydraxon is not affected by mutagen.134
  • The Order of Mata Nui loses contact with its observer in the area of Mahri Nui. They do not know the purpose or effects of the blinding flash which occurred when the Ignika was captured. The Order now has no idea of the events transpiring in the waters of the Pit and fears the worst.109
  • Defilak later escapes from Pridak and helps defend his city against a massive venom eel and the armies of the Barraki.97
  • The 300-foot venom eel is locked in battle with another gigantic sea creature.105
  • Kongu's mask power causes a primitive, ancient sea beast to rise out of the ocean floor.135
  • Kongu's mask power causes a horde of eels to appear suddenly.135
  • Hewkii twice defeats a 300-foot long venom eel.136
  • The first discovery the Toa make is a Matoran village under the sea, called "Mahri Nui" by its inhabitants.125
  • When the Toa Mahri first appear, the Mahri Nui Matoran attack them, believing them to be more prisoners of them Pit.110
  • After first being suspicious of the Toa, the Matoran come to realize that the Toa are there to defend them, and they name the team "Toa Mahri."125 Hahli is the one who manages to convince the Matoran of Mahri Nui that they are there to help them, not harm them.137 Hahli eventually convinces the village leader, Defilak, that they are friends.110
  • Defilak gives the Toa Inika a new name, Toa Mahri, in honor of their efforts to save Mahri Nui from the Barraki.97, 138
  • Now that the Toa Inika have become the Toa Mahri, Hahli suddenly becomes the team's strongest member, since she is in her element.137
  • At first, Jaller finds the Toa's experiences in the Pit to be extremely frustrating. Matoro, now aware that he is the destined wearer of the Mask of Life, is taking on more of a leadership role. Hahli, happy to be in her native element, keeps swimming off on her own. Worst of all, as a Toa of Fire, he has to struggle even to use his element in the depths of the sea. Still, Jaller knows that the most important thing is their mission.139
  • Jaller continues to function as nominal team leader but is unable to keep Matoro from striking out on his own. He has some resentment toward the more prominent role Matoro has taken on the team. He also feels hampered by being in an element so inhospitable to fire. Matoro's relationship with Jaller becomes strained as a result of the importance of his role with regard to the Ignika.47, 50
  • The very last place a Toa of Stone wants to be is underwater. Despite this, Hewkii scores more than his share of victories while in the Pit.136 Hewkii is very, very glad that he once took swimming lessons.130
  • The battle in the Pit is not easy for Kongu. His mask power frightens him, since he never knows what creature he might summon with it.135
  • Hahli is designing an underwater version of the sport of kolhii ball.130
  • Matoro actually starts learning some of the language of the sea creatures.130

The Toa Mahri Find Cordak Blasters

  • The Toa Inika [sic] find Cordak blasters in the Barraki's undersea armory.140
  • When the Toa Mahri find the Cordak blasters, Kongu decides to abandon his melee weapon and take two. When asked why he wants dual blasters, he simply responds, "Two hands."135
  • Nuparu has way too much fun practicing with his Cordak blaster.130

The Mahri Meet the Barraki

  • When the Toa Mahri first arrive in the Pit, Pridak mistakes them for other villains.100 When the Toa first encounter the Barraki, Hahli tricks the villains into believing that she and her teammates are also escaped prisoners.137
  • The Toa Mahri battle the Barraki for possession of the Ignika.45, 46, 47, 48, 51 Mahri Nui finds itself in the middle of a war between the Toa Mahri and the Barraki. The Matoran ally with the Toa despite knowing that if their mission succeeds, Mahri Nui and all of its inhabitants will be destroyed.49 The Matoran fight a spirited war against the Barraki.141

Makuta Takes Possession of Maxilos

  • After Hydraxon mysteriously returns, he recruits Maxilos to serve as a guard once more.142
  • Shortly after this, Maxilos's robot body is possessed by the energy of Makuta.142, 62, 61
  • Maxilos's mechanical body is taken over by Makuta. In addition to the weapons of Maxilos, Makuta still has access to almost all of his original powers, although he cannot shapeshift in this new body.133
  • Shortly after taking over Maxilos, Makuta discovers a great gap in the sea floor: the entrance to the original Pit where the Barraki were originally imprisoned.143
  • Makuta first learns of the existence of the Pit only a few days before he takes Matoro to the original site.143

Matoro Is Captured

  • While scouting on his own, Matoro is captured by Hydraxon, who mistakes him for an escapee from the Pit.50, 144
  • Matoro is freed by the robotic guard Maxilos, whose body is now inhabited by Makuta.50, 144
  • Makuta strikes up an uneasy alliance with Toa Mahri Matoro to get the Ignika away from the Barraki.142 Maxilos/Makuta warns Matoro that if he reveals his identity to the other Toa, he will destroy them. Matoro is thus forced to accept Makuta's help in the quest to find the Mask of Life once more.50 No one other than Matoro is aware that Maxilos is truly Makuta.142 Teridax taunts Matoro by revealing that he is within the armored shell of the Maxilos robot.61
  • Makuta in the guise of Maxilos claims he is there to help the Toa Mahri. Only Matoro knows that Maxilos is really Makuta.133
  • Fearing that his friends might be killed if they attack Makuta, or that the Mask of Life might be lost in the struggle, Matoro does not tell the other Toa that Makuta's spirit is in possession of Maxilos. This secret is more difficult for him to keep than any before.144
  • A Hahnah crab sort of adopts Jaller.145
  • For a brief time, Jaller is assisted by a Hahnah crab.139
  • Kongu is the only Toa Mahri to suffer an energy-draining sea squid attack. He is saved by Jaller's Hahnah crab. This fact is so embarrassing that Kongu refuses to discuss afterward, even to the current time (end of story year 2008).135

A Giant Gadunka Appears

  • A tiny Gadunka hides beneath the Ignika for refuge and is exposed to the energy leaking out of the damaged mask. It grows to millions of times its size and poses a serious threat to the Toa Mahri.146 Gadunka is accidentally exposed to the power of the Mask of Life, and both his size and strength vastly increase as a result.147
  • The tiny Gadunka creature is exposed to the energies of the Mask of Life, causing him to grow to enormous size. He has no idea what the Mask of Life really is – he just remembers using it for shelter, and so believes it belongs to him.133
  • During the battle beneath the sea, Hewkii and Nuparu team up to search for the Mask of Life.148
  • Hewkii and Nuparu stumble upon an eel nest and are ambushed and captured by Ehlek.148
  • Nuparu uses his power to create a pillar of earth to lift them out of their prison, while the two fire Cordak blasters at the monstrous eels who menace them. During the battle, Hewkii uses his mask power to make it appear as if sharks are attacking the eels, which will later lead to a conflict between Pridak and Ehlek.148

Hydraxon Fights Nocturn

  • After the Barraki gain possession of the Ignika, they decide that they should keep it in a neutral spot so that no one Barraki may control it.149
  • The Barraki entrust the Ignika to Nocturn to keep it safe, leaving him with a squid launcher and instructions to guard it and not to leave its resting place.38, 39, 149, 150
  • The Mask of Life is left with Nocturn because the Barraki believe he's too stupid to care about the mask and also his dwelling is a central point between the Barraki's six territories.151
  • The Barraki give the Ignika to Nocturn because they don't know how to use it yet and none of them fully trust any one of them to be the one to hold onto it until they figure it out.152
  • Nocturn quickly discovers that the mask has cursed him so that his slightest touch kills. Puzzled by this, he wanders off with the mask in search of Ehlek.149
  • Nocturn instead wanders off with the Mask of Life and loses it to Hydraxon.150
  • The Barraki check on the Ignika and find it and Nocturn missing.149 Already suspicious, the Barraki are tricked into thinking that one of them has taken it, setting off an internal conflict.39, 149 Pridak suspects that Ehlek is responsible.107
  • Meanwhile, Hydraxon battles and defeats Nocturn. He takes the Ignika with the intent of destroying it.149, 38, 131, 39

The Toa Mahri Clash with the Barraki

  • When the Toa Mahri are imprisoned by the Barraki, Hahli uses her mask to copy the hypnotic power of a sea creature and use it to slip past the squid that is guarding her.137
  • A rumor flashes through Xia that the League of Six Kingdoms is about to return to power. Even without confirmation, factories increase their production of every kind of weapon.17
  • In light of the unprecedented dire circumstances in the Matoran universe, a founding member of the Order of Mata Nui carves a set of tablets containing the latest information about a number of key locations. The intention is to distribute this information to the Order's agents and also to feed this information anonymously to Toa where appropriate. This information is based on intelligence from three Order members: Jerbraz, Tobduk, and Johmak.153
  • Admittedly, Teridax finds Mahri Nui to be a fascinating place, and he enjoys watching the fighting and betrayals over the Mask of Life.61
  • Teridax decides to enlist Matoro's help in a "ridiculous" scheme to harvest the fragments of the Nui stone from the remains of the late Toa Tuyet – a marvelous diversion from Teridax's true intentions.61
  • Teridax orders one of his brothers to bring him the Staff of Artakha. Although his stated reason is to use it to restore the Nui stone, in reality he simply wants to study it. His reasoning is that anything so powerful with such potential for creation could also be turned into an incredible weapon of destruction.61 While in Mahri Nui, Teridax telepathically orders Icarax to retrieve the Mask of Shadows (Kanohi Kraahkan) and the Staff of Artakha.154
  • As Matoro and Maxilos/Makuta swim through the waters of the Pit, Makuta taunts Matoro by reflecting on the Toa's questionable behavior earlier. Makuta then leads Matoro into the depths of the black water, where they come to the entrance to the original Pit which Makuta found earlier. Makuta beckons Matoro inside to show him something, and Matoro follows warily.143
  • Makuta leads Matoro deep into the eerily quiet recesses of the old Pit. Brooding on his mistakes, Matoro thinks to himself that he should have cast aside his mask as soon as he learned it had the power to reanimate the dead. Overhearing, Makuta interrupts to show Matoro what they came to find: the shattered remains of Toa Tuyet, which consists of bits of blue Toa armor and a mask which Matoro vaguely recognizes. Makuta cannot explain exactly how she came to the Pit or how she died, but he does know the original story of how she tried to claim the Nui Stone and was defeated by Toa Lhikan and Toa Nidhiki. Since Tuyet is the only one who might know how to recreate the Nui Stone, Makuta bids Matoro to use his mask power to reanimate her corpse.155 Matoro is reluctant, but Makuta makes it clear that he could simply kill Matoro, take his mask, and do it himself, and that making Matoro do it is merely for his amusement. Matoro concentrates and reanimates Tuyet's body, which stands up unsteadily. Matoro notices minuscule crystalline particles embedded in the armor. Makuta explains that although most of the Nui Stone was vaporized in an explosion, parts of it survived buried in Tuyet's armor. He plans to use those fragments to recreate the original using the Staff of Artakha, which he believes the Toa Nuva are about to retrieve.156
  • Makuta/Maxilos, Matoro, and the body of Tuyet swim out into the open ocean. Matoro's mind races with questions. Suddenly Hahli comes swimming up to them, followed by an army of manta rays. Concerned, Hahli starts asking about Tuyet's reanimated corpse. Makuta telepathically warns Matoro that they must hurry to a meeting and that he will kill Matoro and Hahli if he reveals his disguise. Hahli is worried that Matoro is becoming more distant from the other Toa, but Matoro assures her that everything is fine. Thinking quickly, he compares it to the time Nuparu used his mask power to carry Hahli over a chasm (when he dropped Hahli and almost killed her). After Matoro leaves with Maxilos and Tuyet, Hahli realizes that Matoro was secretly calling for help.157

The Toa Nuva Secretly Return to Metru Nui

  • The Toa Nuva slowly regain their former memories over a period of time.158
  • The current mission of the Toa Nuva is to prepare the universe for the awakening of Mata Nui.159
  • The Toa Nuva drop by Metru Nui but do not talk to the Turaga.160
  • The Toa Nuva don't tell the Turaga what they're doing because they wouldn't approve and the Nuva don't have time to debate their actions.161, 162
  • The Toa Nuva know quite a bit about the Brotherhood of Makuta.163
  • Aware that no Chronicler is present to record their mission, Gali Nuva starts doing so on her own. Although Tahu and Kopaka regard it as a foolish waste of time, Pohatu and Onua understand, leading Gali to remark that this may be because fire and ice are temporary, while rock and earth last on.164
  • As part of their preparations for awakening Mata Nui, the Toa Nuva return to Metru Nui. There, they break into the Great Temple to retrieve a mysterious scroll. Its contents list all that they must do to prepare the universe for the reawakening of the Great Spirit Mata Nui.165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 170, 171 To their astonishment, the first task on the list is to free the Bahrag and unleash the Bohrok swarms on the island of Mata Nui.169, 172 The tasks included on the scroll are: 1. To free the Bahrag so that the Bohrok can be unleashed to clean off the island of Mata Nui. 2. To retrieve the Staff of Artakha, which can be used to repair the damage done by the massive earthquake 1,000 years ago. 3. To retrieve the Heart of the Visorak, an artifact that can summon the Visorak horde from wherever they might be. 4. To stop a massive volcanic eruption on the island of Artidax. 5. To track the movements of the red star in the skies above the island of Mata Nui.173
  • Although some, especially Pohatu, doubt the wisdom of freeing the Bahrag, the Toa Nuva carry out their task. They release the Bahrag and send a signal to unleash the Bohrok swarms once more.174, 166, 167, 168, 169, 172
  • The Bohrok return to the surface of Mata Nui, working to return the island to its original barren state.175, 176
  • It's not vital to their mission, but the Bahrag probably make a new Bohrok-Kal team with new Krana-Kal anyway.177
  • The Toa Nuva's next task is to retrieve the ancient Staff of Artakha from its hidden location in the Archives. They travel there but find that it is missing. Onua recalls Turaga Whenua saying that the staff was stolen long ago by the Dark Hunters. At once the Toa Nuva set out to retrieve the Staff from the Dark Hunters' base, heedless of the danger.169

The Shadow Leech Is Developed

  • Not long before Destiny War, Chapter 6 Tridax and Mutran begin experiments to develop a creature called a shadow leech, a creature that can drain the light out of others and turn them to beings of shadow.54 Tridax works on the Tridax pods with Mutran.178 Tridax is the one who suggests the idea of the Tridax pod.179
  • The development of the shadow leech sparks an idea in Tridax. Tridax knows that the Kanohi Olmak can reach other realities. Tridax begins traveling to those other realities and collecting the Toa Takanuva of each. He continually brings instances of Takanuva back to a chamber in the Destral fortress, draining their light with shadow leeches and keeping them in stasis tubes. His goal is to make an army of shadow Toa, all made from the most dangerous enemy of the Makuta.54
  • Mutran creates the shadow leech, a mutated kraata which can drain the light out of any living being.180
  • Mutran works with his rival, Chirox, to create the shadow leeches and Tridax pods.181
  • By experimenting on kraata, Chirox is able to create shadow leeches.182
  • Destral teleports to a particular location while the [shadow leech] is being developed. As a result, the surrounding waters become full of dead creatures resembling some kind of mutant form of kraata. These appear to be failed results of some sort of experiment. Destral later vanishes from this location.183
  • Looking for a willing Matoran test subject for his shadow leeches, Mutran visits one of the villages in his region. There he runs into Vican, a Matoran villager eager to find a more adventurous life. Mutran successfully drains Vican's light with his shadow leeches. Mutran then employs Vican as his assistant.180
  • Vican is one of the first shadow Matoran ever created.184
  • After Vultraz has worked for Gorast for some time, his light is drained with a shadow leech.180 Vultraz becomes a shadow Matoran. Although he becomes a bit more powerful, his outlook on life is much the same as before, since he never had much use for justice and morality.185
  • Vultraz is transformed into a shadow Matoran by Makuta Icarax and becomes a loyal servant to him ever since.186

The Brotherhood of Makuta Discovers Karda Nui

  • Mutran introduces Vican to the island of Destral.180
  • On a far-flung scouting mission, Vultraz discovers a way into the legendary Karda Nui. He decides to keep this information to himself, hoping to benefit from it in some way.180
  • Later, Gorast finds out that Vultraz has withheld this information and beats it out of him. Mutran takes notice of this when Gorast flings Vultraz through his laboratory. This is shortly after Mutran shows Destral to Vican.180
  • Vamprah is the first Makuta to discover the portal into Karda Nui.187

The Brotherhood of Makuta Arrives in Karda Nui

  • While Teridax is in the waters beneath Voya Nui, Gorast passes news of Karda Nui's discovery to him. Predictably, Teridax orders some of the Makuta to go to Karda Nui immediately and secure it, neutralizing any Av-Matoran living there. Teridax is certain that the Toa Nuva will eventually appear there, and he gives clear orders to the other Makuta to use restraint when fighting them.180 Teridax has no intention of sharing the triumph of the Brotherhood of Makuta with anyone else, so he purposely sends Antroz, Krika, etc. to Karda Nui because they are the Makuta most likely to challenge him one day. He believes it is far better to eliminate them without getting his hands dirty, which the storm in Karda Nui will do nicely.188
  • Icarax considers Teridax's commands to border on treason and refuses to go to Karda Nui. Antroz tries to persuade him but eventually gives up, not entirely wanting his company and figuring that he can wait to summon him until they need his fighting ability.180
  • When Teridax orders Krika to Karda Nui, he goes despite his general reluctance.189
  • Antroz is the leader of the Makuta in Karda Nui.190
  • Antroz leads three other Makuta – Vamprah, Chirox, and Mutran – in attacks on the villages of the Av-Matoran. Their goal is to convert the Matoran into shadow Matoran, thus making it impossible for any more Toa of Light to come into being.190
  • Mutran brings some samples of Niazesk to Karda Nui, where the strange waters mutate them to great size and increase the potency of their poison. Now they haunt the swamps of the core, one more danger in a land full of them.191

World Events

  • A Brotherhood of Makuta member [Icarax] is spotted diving into the silver sea around Metru Nui. He emerges carrying a Kanohi [the Kraahkan] but escapes before Takanuva can reach the spot.183
  • Residents of the area near where Destral last appeared (and later vanished from) are troubled to find the waters full of dead creatures, resembling some kind of mutant form of kraata. Given that the degrees of mutation vary, it would seem they are the failed results of some sort of experiment [shadow leeches].183
  • After its defeat by the Tahtorak, the Kardas dragon flees Voya Nui, heading north. A clash with the Bohrok on Mata Nui is expected.183
  • For reasons unknown, Axonn summons Botar to transport Tahtorak off Voya Nui. Botar, showing a rare sense of humor, deposits the beast in the heart of Xia. It is currently on a destructive rampage.183
  • The Matoran of Karzahni's realm are both pleased and troubled that Karzahni himself has left, leaving them behind. Most think it is some sort of trick and are reluctant to try to escape.183
  • The Toa Nuva have been spotted in the vicinity of Odina.183
  • Following its fight with Tahtorak on Voya Nui, Kardas flies to Mata Nui, where it loses a battle with the reawakened Bohrok.192
  • Botar is still unaware that the Pit has ruptured.193
  • The Order of Mata Nui are still unaware that the Pit has ruptured.194
  • The Order of Mata Nui are aware of the activation of the Toa Mata, the repopulation of Metru Nui, the creation of the Inika, and the retrieval of the Ignika. They are unaware of the Barraki being free.195
  • The Order of Mata Nui are planning for a potential critical battle in the future.196
  • The Order of Mata Nui is unaware of the Red Star's secret, but the Great Beings know.197
  • There are no Brotherhood of Makuta members in the Pit.198
  • The Order of Mata Nui avoids sending Makuta to the Pit because they know the rest of the Brotherhood of Makuta would search for the missing member and almost certainly uncover the existence of the Order, which they are trying to avoid.199
  • The two most powerful factions are currently the Order of Mata Nui and Brotherhood of Makuta. The Dark Hunters are a threat, but not to the same extent as the Brotherhood. The Barraki are much less powerful than they were 80,000 years ago.200
  • The Brotherhood of Makuta has made plans on how they will manipulate the Toa Nuva.201
  • The Dark Hunters are gaining the upper hand in their war with the Brotherhood of Makuta because the latter organization has other things on their minds and aren't focusing all of their attention on the war.202
  • Xia currently has no allies.203
  • Word that Metru Nui is active again has reached some places.204 These places have their own problems and don't send anyone to help rebuild the city.205
  • There was a Makuta assigned to Artakha, but he is now dead.206
  • Nothing is happening on Keetongu's home island.207
  • Conjurer is still in a coma.208
  • Other members of the Barraki's species exist.209
  • The Shadowed One, along with most other beings in the universe, has heard of the Barraki.210
  • Nobody on Metru Nui knows Jaller is a Toa. Pewku is probably being looked after, but does not officially have a new owner.211
  • The "world that feeds the world" is the most damaged site in the Matoran universe.212
  • At least some of the leaders of the Matoran Civil War are probably still alive.213
  • Ahkmou is back at work. As far as he knows, Teridax is dead, so he sees no point in working against the Matoran.214
  • The Turaga prefer having Ahkmou where they can keep an eye on him.215

The Toa Nuva Visit Odina

  • The Toa Nuva sneak onto the shoreline of Odina, approaching from the north and intending to go over the mountains and attack the fortress by surprise. There are fewer guards in the region because of the natural barrier.216
  • The only visible sentry is a Dark Hunter which Tahu recognizes as Minion. Without warning, Kopaka flash-freezes him.216
  • Pohatu leads the way through the mountains.216
  • Lewa leaps from a rock and hovers in the air using his mask power to scout ahead. Suddenly an energy web drops from above and entangles him. A stream of acid narrowly misses him as he falls. The Toa Nuva spot the Dark Hunter Airwatcher swooping down on them, firing more webs, which Tahu deflects with his Mask of Shielding. Kopaka freezes Airwatcher's wings, and Onua knocks him out with a blow using his Mask of Strength.216
  • As the Toa Nuva approach the fortress using the least guarded approach, they encounter various sentries and wandering Dark Hunters, whom they knock out before they can raise an alarm. Lewa Nuva proves useful for this, as he can create a quick vacuum around foes to silence them completely.217
  • The Toa Nuva move quickly to the rear stone wall of the fortress. Pohatu causes a stone hand to emerge from the blocks and squeeze the lone guard until he faints. He then uses his power to open a way inside.217
  • The Toa Nuva enter the maze-like interior of the fortress. Tahu Nuva supposes that the Staff will be found near the Shadowed One's throne. Suddenly the Shadowed One's harsh voice booms from all around, claiming he had been aware of their presence and had allowed them to come this far. The stone corridor walls shift, sealing the Toa Nuva in.217
  • The Shadowed One offers to make a deal with the Toa Nuva. He explains that he had once possessed the Staff of Artakha but later gave it to the island of Xia in payment for weapons. He will free the Toa Nuva and point them to the likely location of the Staff if they agree to eliminate Roodaka, who is a leading citizen on Xia and has been double-dealing by selling information to both the Dark Hunters and the Brotherhood of Makuta. Surprisingly, Tahu agrees.218
  • Before leaving, Pohatu makes it so that within an hour of their departure, every stone in the Shadowed One's fortress will crumble into dust.218
  • Later, Tahu tells Gali that he has other plans for Roodaka. He sends Lewa Nuva back to Metru Nui to fetch the Rahaga in the hopes of making Roodaka undo their mutation, while the rest of them travel to Xia.218
  • The Dark Hunter fortress on Odina is destroyed, although this is at best a minor setback to an organization so powerful.219

A Major Battle on Xia

  • When the Toa Nuva arrive on Xia, they find the place being ravaged by a battle between the Tahtorak and the Kanohi Dragon. Even the famed Mountain has chunks torn out of it.218
  • Many of the buildings on Xia are badly damaged by the battle between the Tahtorak and the Kanohi Dragon.54
  • The Rahaga hear about events on Xia and set off to help the Vortixx.220
  • Lewa Nuva meets the Rahaga on their way from Metru Nui to Xia.220
  • Tahu sends Onua tunneling into the island to find the Staff in its underground hiding place. The others try to rescue the natives from the Rahi battle. During this, Kopaka finds himself saving Roodaka, who balks at the Toa's attempt to help.218
  • Lewa Nuva and the Rahaga arrive on Xia. Gali Nuva is amazed at the Rahaga's generosity for coming to help the Vortixx.220
  • For the first time in 1,000 years, the Rahaga are face to face with Roodaka. Kopaka reasons with Roodaka that she is in an impossible situation &ndash her island is being destroyed by the Tahtorak and Kanohi Dragon, and she is wanted dead by the Dark Hunters and probably the Brotherhood of Makuta. Norik says that she should meet the fate she deserves, but Roodaka understands Kopaka's meaning and fires her Rhotuka spinners at the six Rahaga, miraculously transforming them back into the powerful Toa Hagah.220
  • Onua Nuva reaches the store room deep underground where the Staff of Artakha is. A Makuta wearing the Kanohi Kraahkan named Icarax is already there, saying that the Brotherhood now belongs to him and that the realm of Karzahni soon will be too. Icarax beats Onua Nuva to within an inch of his life and takes the Staff of Artakha. Onua retreats to the surface empty-handed.220
  • The Toa Hagah's celebration is interrupted when Onua Nuva arrives on the surface, explaining what happened to the Staff. Bomonga offers for the Toa Hagah to take care of matters on Xia while the Toa Nuva go after the Staff.220
  • Icarax's quest for the Staff of Artakha brings him into conflict with the Toa Nuva.154

The Toa Nuva Fight Icarax in Karzahni

  • The Toa Nuva go on a side trip to Karzahni.221
  • The main reason the Toa Nuva go to Karzahni is to retrieve the Toa Inika's Matoran masks.222
  • The Toa Nuva go to Karzahni with the intent to retrieve the Toa Inika's old masks. It is not part of their mission.223
  • Tahu wants to retrieve Jaller's mask out of respect for Lhikan, the famous hero who wore the mask before him.224
  • The Toa Nuva go to Karzahni to retrieve the Inika's Matoran masks because Tahu wants to.225
  • The Toa Nuva come to Karzahni in search of Icarax. They see no sign of Karzahni himself or his Manas but find the realm's hundreds of Matoran prisoners inexplicably abandoned. With gentle words and a great deal of patience, Lewa and Onua convince the Matoran to leave their prison and head north toward Metru Nui.226
  • Icarax strikes at the Toa Nuva from ambush. At first the Toa Nuva mistake him for the Makuta they fought before, since he wears his mask. He proves to be an even more skilled and ferocious warrior, felling the Toa Nuva with swift, sure blows.226
  • Gali Nuva stands alone against Icarax, who holds the Staff of Artakha in his claw, amid the bodies of her comrades, unsure if they are still alive. With great reluctance, Gali Nuva chooses to summon every bit of moisture from the air for hundreds of kio around, preparing to unleash it in one devastating blast. When she releases it, a wall of water a thousand feet high sweeps through Karzahni, leveling everything in its path. Gali Nuva strains to manipulate the currents and fails to snatch the Staff from Icarax. She shares her mask power with the other Toa Nuva to allow them to breathe.226
  • When the flood subsides, Icarax is gone, but the Toa Nuva have all survived. The realm of Karzahni has been utterly flooded and destroyed.226
  • Icarax's conflict with the Toa Nuva results in the destruction of the realm of Karzahni.154
  • Lhikan and Jaller's Noble Hau is spotted floating on the water. Tahu saves it from being lost. Gali looks in astonishment at the destruction she has caused.226, 171
  • Some of Gali Nuva's peace-keeping nature changes in the days before the Toa Nuva come to Karda Nui. Forced to battle Icarax for the Staff of Artakha, Gali unleashes a tidal wave that destroys the realm of Karzahni. She has never caused such havoc before with her elemental powers, but there was no choice. Like it or not, the Toa are at war, and she is going to have to fight.227
  • Despite their failure, Tahu insists that the Toa Nuva continue to carry out what remaining tasks they can. The Toa Nuva decide to split up.228 The Toa Nuva fail to perform the task of retrieving the Staff of Artakha.173
  • As part of the Toa Nuva's preparations for the awakening of Mata Nui,167 Karzahni's realm is destroyed and his Matoran prisoners freed.229, 167
  • Tahu Nuva and the Toa Nuva recover Lhikan/Jaller's Kanohi Hau, as well as the other masks of the Matoran in his team.230, 47, 229
  • Makuta and Matoro meet with Makuta Icarax in the waters above the Pit to pick up the Staff of Artakha. Makuta displays no particular emotion but simply takes the item from Icarax and dismisses him with a nod.231, 232 When Icarax and Teridax meet to hand off the Staff of Artakha, they meet outside the zone with Pit mutagen.233

Makuta Defeats Karzahni

  • Lesovikk and Sarda discover Idris, mutated by the waters of the Pit like Sarda, and recruit her in their task.234
  • Karzahni journeys to Mahri Nui, where he is defeated by Makuta and Toa Lesovikk.229
  • Sarda participates in the battle against Karzahni.99
  • Karzahni is heading toward Mahri Nui when he spots Maxilos, Matoro, and the body of Tuyet swimming in the other direction. With his keen hearing he overhears Maxilos mentioning a "Staff of Artakha." Because of his hatred for Artakha, he decides to attack.235, 231
  • Karzahni yanks away the Maxilos robot's black fire sword with his chain, then shatters Tuyet's body swimming behind it. Before Matoro can attack, Karzahni issues a horrifying vision of failure against him. With only Maxilos left to oppose him, Karzahni threatens Maxilos to tell him more about the Staff of Artakha. Maxilos speaks something in response but so softly that Karzahni must come within his reach to hear it. Karzahni remarks that although Maxilos' design is unfamiliar, it has the "stink of Artakha." Maxilos' arm then lashes out and grabs Karzahni's throat with incredible speed. Makuta reveals himself to Karzahni, irritated by the delay he has caused. He hurls him roughly through a rock ledge and into the sea floor. With Karzahni's concentration broken, Matoro shakes free from his vision. Karzahni rises, forces a twisted arm back into place, and challenges Makuta defiantly. An army of hundreds of hungry Manas at Karzahni's command appears.235
  • Horrified by the advancing Manas, Matoro hurls his ice power against them, but they shrug it off. Meanwhile, Makuta does nothing until the Manas are within striking distance. He then uses his Rahi control power to turn half of the Manas against the other half in a gruesome struggle, disintegrating Karzahni's army. Surprised but still confident, Karzahni uses his mask power on Makuta. In a lifelike vision, Makuta witnesses the Toa Nuva's awakening of Mata Nui, and Mata Nui's retribution against those who rebelled against him. Knowing the punishment that awaits him, Makuta screams.231
  • Makuta's scream slowly fades into silence. After a long pause, Makuta comes back to his senses and sends Karzahni sprawling with a single sweep of his arm. He grants that Karzahni's power is impressive, but boasts that he is still the more powerful. Makuta plunges telepathically into Karzahni's mind, still stung by Karzahni's attack and looking for retribution, and tears it to shreds. With a small amount of his magnetic power, he sends Karzahni hurtling through the ocean until lost from sight.234
  • Karzahni's attack proves to be an annoyance to Teridax's plans, but Teridax considers him to be little real threat. He reaches into his mind and tears at it until Karzahni sees himself for what he is – a sight he cannot stand, as it turns out.61
  • Lesovikk, Sarda, and Idris watch the battle between Karzahni and Maxilos. The Matoran wonder if their quest is even necessary anymore, given Karzahni's injuries, but Lesovikk, bringing up a story of a fight he once had with a wounded rock lion, suggests that Karzahni may be more dangerous than ever before.234
  • Lesovikk, Sarda, and Idris follow the wounded Karzahni for the better part of a day.236
  • Brutaka escapes the Pit and reforms.237

Makuta Attempts to Reconstruct the Nui Stone

  • Makuta does not display any particular emotion after his battle with Karzahni.232
  • Makuta and Matoro stand over a single fragment of the Nui Stone embedded in Tuyet's armor. According to Makuta, this is all the Staff needs in order to recreate the Nui Stone. Makuta reveals that should another Toa ever turn evil like Tuyet or Nidhiki, he could use the stone to increase that Toa's power many times over and have an all-powerful Toa at his command. Makuta uses the staff on the fragment, and the Nui Stone starts to reform itself. Matoro charges in to stop him, but Makuta traps him in a stasis field.232
  • A blast of raw power strikes Makuta squarely in the back. Makuta staggers, dropping the Staff. He wheels around to face his attacker, snarling. There he finds the mutated Brutaka poised to attack. Brutaka explains that although he is a fallen hero, he can still recognize Makuta for the monster he is.232
  • Makuta fires a blast of shadow energy at Brutaka, who sidesteps it and dives past Makuta. In a rapid series of events, Brutaka snatches up the Staff of Artakha and shouts Botar's name. Botar appears in the middle of battle and takes the Staff, sparing a moment for a nod of thanks to Brutaka. In an instant he disappears with the Staff.232 Brutaka steals the precious Staff of Artakha from Makuta Teridax.237
  • Brutaka steals the Staff of Artakha from Teridax and passes it on to someone with the ability to teleport. In an instant, the Staff is gone to parts unknown to Teridax.61 Brutaka obtains the Staff of Artakha.173
  • With the Staff out of Makuta's reach, Makuta is left to deal with Brutaka. Brutaka does not cower from Makuta's threats, but simply laughs hysterically since he has nothing left to lose.232 Brutaka orders Matoro to escape to the other Toa while he handles Makuta. Even given Brutaka's troubled past, the choice is easy for Matoro, who swims away with all speed to return to his fellow Toa.238
  • Teridax turns on Brutaka, prepared to destroy him for interfering. Brutaka is a formidable foe, fighting with the reckless courage of someone who has nothing to lose. Still, Teridax believes that he will win in the end, but the fight ends when Brutaka tells him that Hydraxon has taken the Mask of Life and intends to destroy it. Teridax cannot allow this to happen, since without the Mask of Life, there will be no way to restore life to Mata Nui if he dies, and the universe will collapse, with nothing left for Teridax to rule. Teridax chooses to take care of the mask instead of fighting Brutaka, vowing that they will meet again one day. He seeks out the mask to make sure it ends up in the hands of the Toa.61
  • Genuinely annoyed that Brutaka cost him the Nui Stone, Makuta fires a burst of shadow energy at Brutaka. Brutaka uses his mask power to divert the blast through a portal into the zone of darkness. Brutaka knocks Makuta's weapon from his hand with an energy blast from his sword. Makuta slams Brutaka into a mountainside with his gravity power. As they fight, Brutaka starts unraveling Makuta's true intentions: that he clearly did not intend to retrieve the Mask of Life through the bumbling Piraka, but that he does want to be present when it is found, controlling who uses it and when. Makuta throws a stasis field around Brutaka, who destroys it with a swipe of his blade. Makuta asks Brutaka what he wants. He replies that he once wanted to rule the universe with the Mask of Life, but now his outlook has improved and he only wants to hinder Makuta. Amused, he mentions to Makuta that he last saw the Mask of Life with Nocturn, although Hydraxon was about to take it away, which surely requires Makuta's attention. Makuta weighs his options, and although his instinct is to keep fighting, he knows that he cannot afford to lose control of events at this late stage. Makuta leaves Brutaka with a promise to continue their fight later.238
  • As Makuta swims rapidly through the waters of the Pit, he reflects on the long journey which led to this point. He is amazed that he first arose only a mere 100,000 years ago along with his fellow Makuta.239

Lesovikk, Sarda, and Idris Capture Karzahni

  • Lesovikk, Sarda, and Idris finally spot Karzahni taking refuge in a sea cave. Lesovikk starts outlining a plan to use some equipment he saw in a Barraki weapon cache to construct a trap for Karzahni. Suddenly a vision caused by Karzahni's power takes hold of Lesovikk. In this vision, Lesovikk is with his original Toa team, battling for their lives against a sentient acid cloud. Many Rahi and some Matoran have already been burned to ashes by the menace. Lesovikk realizes that he is re-living the critical moment when his hesitation had cost the lives of his entire team. Instead of making the same blunder, Lesovikk uses his elemental power to scatter the acid cloud creature into the winds. Afterwards, his fellow Toa and the grateful Matoran celebrate the victory, although Lesovikk, losing his grip on reality, senses that something is amiss. His friend Nikila helps to alleviate his concerns, and Lesovikk soon forgets his misgivings in favor of the joy of being reunited with his old team.236
  • In the meantime, Sarda and Idris look with concern at Lesovikk, who seems to have fallen into a trance. Sarda realizes that Karzahni may be showing him a vision of bliss instead of horror.236
  • Sarda finds the equipment Lesovikk was referring to and sets up a trap. Sarda decides that the Matoran must fight Karzahni on their own, although Idris tries to talk him out of it.240
  • Meanwhile, Lesovikk believes that thousands of years have passed of his fighting alongside his Toa team. They are enjoying a victory after a battle to save a band of Toa besieged by Frostelus on a remote island; the novice Toa named Lhikan showed such bravery in the fight that Lesovikk is considering recruiting him. When Nikila suggests patrolling a zyglak hunting ground in the coming week, however, Lesovikk abruptly starts to pierce the illusion, realizing that his Toa team had been killed by a horde of zyglak and had never fought an acid cloud. Tearing himself free of the vision, Lesovikk comes back to his senses, drifting alone in the waters of the Pit.240
  • Sarda and Idris lure Karzahni out of his cave, who chases them in maddened pursuit. Lesovikk arrives just as they are exiting the cave. Karzahni grabs the Matoran and tosses them roughly to the side, but he lands in the trap, which snaps shut around him.93
  • Lesovikk is disgusted by Karzahni's pathetic state of mind, which somewhat spoils his long-awaited victory. Recalling that someone is supposed to take Karzahni away once he has been defeated, he leaves him be. He catches a glimpse of Botar as he disappears with Karzahni.93
  • Sarda and Idris worry that they will be unable to return to Mahri Nui now that they have become water breathers. Lesovikk leads them to a cave littered with pieces of equipment, including what he believes to be a breathing system, which he found while scouting around. Lesovikk plans to modify the breather to allow water breathers to survive in air, although they must decide who wears the device. Idris offers it to Lesovikk, but he decides to remain at work in the Pit for a while. Sarda chooses to join Lesovikk in his adventures, and insistently gives the device to Idris.93
  • After many hours of work, Lesovikk fashions the device into a crude helmet which allows Idris to breathe sea water contained in the device while in air. Sarda and Idris make a brief but difficult farewell. Sarda and Lesovikk swim off into the ocean depths.93
  • Makuta tells Matoro that he does want the life of Mata Nui to be saved, but it is doubtful that this is the full truth.62

  • Ehlek's legions launch a surprise attack against Pridak, who turns his sharks against his former ally, launching an all-out undersea war.100
  • War breaks out among the Barraki. The Toa Mahri attempt to use the confusion to search for the Ignika.39
  • Mantax battles Toa Mahri Hahli, who finally succeeds in deceiving him into believing that the other Barraki had betrayed him. Mantax invites her to be his lieutenant, and she accepts, leading an army of manta rays toward Mahri Nui.72 After defeating Mantax in battle, Hahli fools him into believing the other Barraki are about to betray him. Mantax forms an alliance with her and plans to attack his teammates.137
  • Hahli appears to strike up an alliance with Mantax and leads his army of rays toward Mahri Nui.45 Mantax forms a brief alliance with Hahli.242
  • Carapar and Kalmah form an uneasy alliance with Jaller to get the Ignika.76
  • Kalmah strikes a deal with Jaller to let the Toa have the mask in return for using it to restore the Barraki to what they once were and for the death of Pridak.85 Having no loyalty to Pridak, Kalmah offers Jaller an alliance if Jaller will kill Pridak.243
  • Hahli's plan backfires when the unexpected interference of Hydraxon makes it possible for Mantax to steal the Mask of Life.137 Mantax steals the Mask of Life for himself. Mantax offers to share its power with the other Barraki if they kill the traitor among them.242
  • The Barraki realize their error and band together to battle the Toa Mahri for possession of the Ignika.38

The Toa Nuva Perform More Tasks

  • Tahu and Kopaka travel to an island chain far to the south of the universe to quell a series of active volcanoes. After struggling to cap erupting volcanoes, they both return with badly scorched armor.228, 244 Tahu Nuva and Kopaka Nuva accomplish the Toa Nuva's fourth task: to stop a massive volcanic eruption on the island of Artidax.173 The purpose of this mission is not to make it possible to free Miserix.245
  • Tahu and Kopaka quell the minor volcanic eruptions on the island of Artidax. This will make it possible for the Order of Mata Nui to reach Makuta Miserix, who is imprisoned there.58
  • Pohatu and Onua journey south in search of an artifact called the "heart of the Visorak."228
  • Pohatu and Onua are told not to let the Heart of the Visorak touch the ground. They learn that when the Heart touches the ground, it summons the Visorak from all ends of the world to its location. This explains how the Makuta assembled the horde, and its loss will make it difficult for them to gather the hordes again.244
  • Pohatu and Onua find the Heart of the Visorak, a golden crystal about the size of Pohatu's head and inexplicably suspended in mid-air.244 Pohatu Nuva and Onua Nuva accomplish the Toa Nuva's third task: to retrieve the Heart of the Visorak.173
  • Lewa disappears when a weird voice sends him up to Mata Nui to retrieve an underground sundial and leave it in the Archives. Gali assumes that Tahu gave him orders in secret.228, 244 Lewa Nuva is dispatched to Mata Nui to obtain a huge sundial that is buried there.173
  • Gali is assigned to return to the surface of the island of Mata Nui. According to the parchment, she will find the cliffside and telescope [in Ta-Wahi] intact and must use it to take measurements of the red star.228
  • Lewa returns to Mata Nui, seeing its desolation, and retrieves the sundial as told. He leaves before Gali arrives.244
  • Lewa retrieves the sundial from Mata Nui.246
  • Gali returns to Mata Nui to find it much changed. The Bohrok have scoured it of all trees, rocks, rivers, and streams. Very few of its geologic features remain.228
  • Gali finds the badly wounded [Kardas dragon] among shattered Bohrok remains, evidence of a great battle caused when the Rahi interfered with their mission. She does what she can to ease its suffering, then attends to her task.228 Gali Nuva cares for and partially heals Kardas.192
  • After being cared for by Gali Nuva on Mata Nui, Kardas travels to Metru Nui and is captured and placed in the Archives.192
  • To Gali's surprise, she finds the cliffside and telescope intact. She focuses the telescope on the red star far above and makes careful note of its location in space, its angle to the planet, its brightness, and whether it seems to be moving away, toward, or parallel to the island. Something suddenly inspires Gali to combine the power of her Akaku Nuva with the telescope. Expecting to see fiery energies, Gali is shocked to see that something is alive inside the star. She records this encounter on her stone in disbelief.228 Gali Nuva accomplishes the Toa Nuva's fifth task: to track the movements of the red star in the skies above the island of Mata Nui. Gali Nuva is startled to discover that there are beings living inside the star.173
  • Gali sprints from the telescope across the sands of Mata Nui, rushing to tell the other Toa Nuva about what she has seen.247

The Staff of Artakha Is Activated

  • Botar suddenly appears in Gali's way and curtly teleports her to Daxia.247
  • When she can see clearly again, Gali finds herself in a vast, spherical chamber alongside the Botar and the other Toa Nuva. The place seems strangely familiar to her.247
  • The shadows seem to deepen as a female voice fills the room. The speaker congratulates the Toa Nuva on their efforts and says the Order of Mata Nui's faith in them has been justified. The Order has brought the Toa Nuva to Daxia to see the fruits of their labors.247
  • A light shines down on some sort of power cradle, and a massive warrior easily nine feet tall brings, to the Toa Nuva's surprise, the Staff of Artakha to it. The warrior places the staff in a niche on the cradle, and the staff begins to glow and hum. As its power intensifies, the voice explains that Mata Nui suffered much because of Makuta's treacherous attack, and that their goal is to heal this damage in order to prepare for Mata Nui's return. Although what they see is only a fraction of the staff's power, its energies are reaching out from Metru Nui to the southern islands, undoing the damage caused by Mata Nui's fall, sealing chasms, restoring buildings, raising mountains, and rejuvenating rivers. When the other Toa sever the cord between Voya Nui and Mahri Nui, so the voice says, Voya Nui will also return to its rightful place, and the hole it made will be sealed behind it. The staff has even more capabilities, but its one limitation is that it cannot penetrate the universe core and heal the damage there, since its walls are too well-shielded. When Gali asks if it will restore Mata Nui, the voice amusedly replies that it will not, as the Bohrok were fulfilling their rightful function. The voice says that the Toa Nuva have their most dangerous mission yet before them.247
  • The Toa Nuva stand in a small chamber awaiting instructions for their next task. In the meantime, they check their gear for damage and catch up on each other's adventures.244

The Toa Nuva Visit Artakha

  • A Matoran comes to the doorway to rouse the Toa Nuva. He explains, with some foreboding, that they are being given the great honor of setting foot on the island of Artakha, where his master dwells. His master's whims are totally unpredictable, and he has not opened his fortress in millennia. The Toa Nuva's surroundings blur for a moment, and they suddenly find themselves standing with the Matoran on a desolate beach on Artakha.244
  • When the Toa Nuva have accomplished their tasks, they are teleported to the island of Artakha for their next mission.173

The Brotherhood of Makuta Invades Karda Nui

  • The Brotherhood of Makuta invades the universe core, Karda Nui. Mutran's creations spread darkness and corruption.248
  • The Brotherhood of Makuta invades Karda Nui. They begin transforming the Av-Matoran into evil shadow Matoran.249
  • The Brotherhood of Makuta launches their most daring plan yet: seizing control of Karda Nui, the core of the universe, and capturing and corrupting the Matoran of Light who live there.182
  • When Antroz places Krika in command of the Makuta in the swamp, he accepts despite his general reluctance.189
  • Gorast, Bitil, and Krika split off from the other Makuta and descend toward the swamp of Karda Nui in case the Toa Nuva appear there first.180
  • The Makuta in the swamp shapeshift to look like monstrous insects of the swamp, but what they could not know is that the waters of the swamp will mutate them so they have those forms forever.250
  • The three Makuta who are exposed to the swamp waters in Karda Nui are mutated by them and lose the ability to shapeshift.251 Some of the Mistika Makuta's powers, including shapeshifting, become unavailable to them due to their mutation by the swamp water.252 The effects of the swamp water change Gorast so that she now needs to breathe.227 Krika is trapped in an insectoid form by the power of the swamp waters.189
  • Bitil sees what has happened to Krika and Gorast and gets out of the swamp before it does too much to him. He does not suffer as bad a mutation as Krika and Gorast, although he is trapped in his insectoid form.253
  • Krika is able to change his density so he can pass through solid matter, but needs to absorb energy from other beings or his surrounding in order to avoid becoming permanently ghostly.189
  • Trapped in her insectoid form, Gorast needs to drain light from other living things to survive. Although she can feed on the light of swamp Rahi, they are too small to sustain her for long.254
  • When the Makuta come to Karda Nui, they create a hive for themselves which hangs from the ceiling of the huge cave. Inside, Antroz, Vamprah, Chirox, and Mutran gather for strategy sessions. The hive is also the site of the vats in which shadow leeches are created. Mutran and his assistant Vican do most of this work and also serve as guardians for the hive.255 In Karda Nui, Mutran monitors the creation of the shadow leeches and Tridax pods and guards the hive where they come into being.181
  • Vamprah amuses himself by hunting Matoran in Karda Nui.180
  • Gavla is the first Karda Nui Matoran to be transformed into a shadow Matoran. Gavla has never liked her fellow villagers and so falls easily into the role of opposing them.256
  • Vamprah turns Radiak into a shadow Matoran. Radiak proves to be just as fierce a fighter for evil as he was for good.257
  • Chirox turns Kirop into a shadow Matoran.258
  • Over the last few days leading up to story year 2008 The Makuta use shadow leeches to drain the light from Av-Matoran, turning them into evil shadow Matoran.259
  • Tanma is the leader of the Av-Matoran survivors following the capture of Kirop by the Makuta. He organizes the defense of the village during the period before the Toa Nuva's arrival in Karda Nui.260
  • Gavla is later the leader of the shadow Matoran.256
  • The Order of Mata Nui receives an unconfirmed report from Karda Nui that the Brotherhood of Makuta has launched an assault and is attempting to take control of it. Should they succeed, they will have control over whether and when Mata Nui's life can be saved, regardless of whether they possess the Ignika. The Order relies on the Toa Nuva to defeat this invasion, but is also fully prepared to support them with Order members, other Toa, and any other force they can muster.261

Mahri Nui Is Evacuated

  • The Mahri Nui Matoran fit the badly injured stinger whale they nursed back to health with weapons for the fight.262
  • During their adventure, the Toa Mahri learn that to achieve their mission, they must sever the stone cord that links Mahri Nui and Voya Nui. This will almost certainly result in the destruction of the underwater village.110
  • The Toa Mahri evacuate the Matoran up the cord.110
  • Jaller leads the evacuation of the Mahri Nui Matoran to Voya Nui.139
  • On their return journey to Voya Nui through the cord, the Toa discover all the Zyglak dead, murdered by the mutated Piraka.56
  • Axonn captures the snake-like Piraka.263 Axonn single-handedly defeats the mutated Piraka.237
  • The Toa Mahri are met by Axonn in the cord. Axonn vows to keep the Matoran safe no matter what might come next.110
  • Axonn gives the Toa Terrain Crawler to the Toa Mahri.262

  • Hewkii battles the ferocious Gadunka.136
  • In Karda Nui, Mutran busies himself by creating shadow leeches in a new hive of his.180
  • In a failed experiment, Mutran creates a hissing, biting, toxic creature. Although he normally disposes of accidents as soon as possible, he has Vican stuff it into a crate to send to Chirox.248
  • As Mutran reclines in his hive in Karda Nui, he carves a chronicle which briefly summarizes the actions of the Brotherhood of Makuta over the last 100,000 years.248
  • Teridax knows that he cannot suddenly start acting like the Toa's ally, so he makes a show of trying to take the Mask of Life away from Jaller. When Jaller passes the mask on to Matoro, Teridax is glad inside, since his plan is proceeding. However, the only possible flaw now is the Barraki, who might take the mask back or in some way interfere with his timing.61
  • On his way to prevent Hydraxon from acquiring the Mask of Life, Makuta is ambushed by Matoro, who freezes him solid inside super-hard ice. Makuta is colder than he has ever been, and even his energy form starts to crystallize.265
  • Makuta watches as the Toa Mahri, Barraki, and Hydraxon are locked in a mad scramble to acquire the Mask of Life.265
  • A wall of flame created by Jaller heats the ice trapping Makuta. The strength of Maxilos' body is enough for him to break free, and he joins the battle.265
  • Although Matoro is only able to slow Teridax down, it is long enough for Jaller to give Matoro the Mask of Life. Jaller also tells Matoro that Kongu revealed the truth: that Matoro is the destined wearer of the mask.144 Jaller succeeds in obtaining the Mask of Life and passing it on to Matoro.139
  • Teridax fails to secure the Kanohi Ignika. This sets back the Brotherhood's plans, but they remain on track.261

The Toa Mahri Sever the Cord

  • The Toa Mahri use Cordak blasters to sever the cord between Mahri Nui and Voya Nui.53 Nuparu participates in the severing of the cord linking Voya Nui to Mahri Nui.148
  • Not wanting the Barraki to interfere with the timing of his plans, Teridax challenges the Barraki, revealing his true identity. He provides the Toa with the time needed to sever the Cord. He then allows the Barraki to (seemingly) destroy him so they will be free to delay the Toa just enough for his purposes.61
  • With the Maxilos robot demolished, the Barraki turn their attention to the Toa Mahri again. Still determined to claim the Mask of Life, which the Toa have, they gather their armies and pursue them.75
  • When the cord is cut, Voya Nui plunges beneath the sea and destroys Mahri Nui as it passes.110

Matoro Uses the Mask of Life to Save Mata Nui

  • Desperate to save Mata Nui, Matoro races off with the Mask of Life with the Barraki in pursuit.144
  • With Matoro leading the way, the Toa Mahri chase the island of Voya Nui as it flies through the sea back to its original spot. Harried by the Barraki, they cannot move fast enough.75
  • Matoro is too late – Mata Nui has died. However, Matoro refuses to give up.144 When Mata Nui dies, Matoro insists that the Toa continue to try to save him. Jaller tells Matoro to go on while the rest of the Toa hold off the Barraki and their armies.139 The Great Spirit dies, but Matoro refuses to give up. Jaller tells him to go on and make one last attempt to make things right while he and the other Toa Mahri make a stand and try to hold off the Barraki.75
  • Hewkii overcomes an entire school of Takea sharks to stop them from pursuing Matoro.136
  • The battle that follows is intense, and it seems certain that the Toa will lose. Jaller actually prepares to unleash a nova blast of heat and flame which will wipe out the Barraki, their forces, and the four Toa beside him as a last-ditch effort to give Matoro the time he needs.139 When Jaller is about to go nova and destroy both the Barraki and the Toa Mahri, Hewkii begins to protest. Then he backs off, realizing that it is the only thing to do, and that sometimes being the leader means making tough choices.136 Nuparu participates in this desperate attempt to buy time for Matoro to save the universe.148 Badly outnumbered, the Toa have no chance, but they fight on anyway. They are fighting a losing battle. Convinced that it is the only way to give Matoro the time he needs, Jaller prepares to unleash a nova blast which will kill the Barraki, their armies, and the Toa.75
  • Matoro races after Voya Nui, managing to follow it through a hole in the sea floor. Down below is the gap once filled by the land mass, and below that, the core of the universe. Straining, Matoro slips through the gap before the island slams down on it. Matoro finds himself falling through a vast cavern.75
  • Diving into the core of the universe, Matoro dons the Mask of Life. Its power turns his body into raw energy and then uses that energy to restore life to the Great Spirit.144 In the core, Matoro puts on the Mask of Life. The power of the mask begins converting his body into energy. Matoro realizes that the price of saving Mata Nui's life will be his own. He will become one with the mask, and their combined energies will save the Great Spirit. Matoro does not panic or feel regret, but accepts that this is his destiny and that his sacrifice will save the universe and everyone he cares for.75
  • The voice that tells Matoro to put on the Ignika is that of the Ignika itself.266
  • At the very last moment, Matoro uses the power of the Mask of Life to teleport the Toa Mahri back to Metru Nui.139 With his last conscious thought, Matoro uses the power of the Mask of Life to teleport the other five Toa Mahri back to Metru Nui.75
  • With the Mask of Life gone, the Barraki are left stranded in the ocean with no way to escape.75 Kalmah is stranded in the Pit when Matoro escapes with the Mask of Life.243
  • Matoro lets go, becoming fully energy. In a great flash of light and life power, Mata Nui is saved.75
  • In the millisecond between when Mata Nui's body is alive once more and Mata Nui's spirit returns to it, Teridax's own spirit enters it. Once he is in place, Mata Nui's consciousness is barred from residing in his own body, since two spirits cannot occupy the same form.188 The fact that Mata Nui is asleep when he comes back to life gives Teridax enough time to replace his spirit.267
  • Mutran notices a powerful flash of light outside his hive.180
  • Antroz is blinded by the explosion of light accompanying Mata Nui's return to life.190 Chirox is blinded by the explosion of light in Karda Nui.268 Vamprah is blinded by the explosion of light in Karda Nui.187

  • Matoro dies a hero, perhaps the greatest hero ever known.144 Matoro's actions save the entire Toa Mahri team and the universe.136
  • Jaller is able to contain his nova blast power so that the city is not destroyed.139
  • Nuparu is the first to notice that Matoro is not among them.148
  • The Mask of Life reverses what it did to Gadunka and shrinks it back to what it was before.147
  • The tiny Gadunka is later eaten by a Takea shark.147
  • After Matoro's death, the Kanohi Ignika falls to the bottom of the Karda Nui swamp.270
  • Voya Nui is returned to the land mass it originally came from.271 Voya Nui returns to its original place on the southern continent.110
  • A matter of days after the Toa Inika descended the Cord Matoro sacrifices himself.272

Aftermath of Matoro's Sacrifice

  • After being blinded, Antroz has to rely on a shadow Matoran, Radiak, to navigate.190 Chirox has to rely on a shadow Matoran to provide him with sight.268 Vamprah has to rely on a shadow Matoran to provide him with sight.187
  • The shadow Matoran act as the eyes of the now-blinded Antroz, Chirox, and Vamprah in combat.182
  • Kopeke is appointed as the new Chronicler of Metru Nui.273 Now that Hahli is a Toa, the Turaga appoint Kopeke as the new Chronicler of Metru Nui.274, 275

  • Nuparu gives the eulogy for Matoro at the memorial service held in the Metru Nui Coliseum.148
  • After the memorial for Matoro, Kongu takes the Matoran Chronicler Kopeke aside and warns him that he had "better deep-carve only nice things" about the deceased hero.135
  • Sometime after the memorial service, Hewkii and Nuparu work together on a carved statue to honor their fallen friend Matoro.148
  • In the center of Metru Nui, Turaga Onewa himself constructs a statue of the late Matoro as a tribute to the fallen hero.54
  • Jaller feels deep grief over Matoro's death. Thoughts of Matoro continually distract him. It troubles him that the Toa Mahri were unable to fulfill their destiny without losing one of their own.54
  • The snake-like Piraka are imprisoned on the island of Daxia.263

Hydraxon Captures Pridak

  • The day after the Toa Mahri disappear from the Pit Yesterday, the Toa Mahri abruptly disappeared from the Pit, leaving behind a shattered Mahri Nui and six very angry Barraki. Hydraxon is left alone to clean up the mess. Hydraxon prepares six cells for the Barraki and goes out into the waters to hunt them.277
  • Hydraxon comes across a school of panicked reef raiders fleeing from sharks. Hydraxon explodes the sharks with a shot from his Cordak blaster, then turns to find Pridak and his school of sharks waiting for him. Hydraxon hurls his wrist blades at Pridak, but Pridak bats them aside. Pridak claims that Hydraxon is an impostor and produces the mask of the original Hydraxon whom the Barraki killed 1,000 years ago. Mantax found the mask buried in the mud in the ruins of the Pit. Hydraxon is hardly fazed, but Pridak insists that he cannot be the real Hydraxon, even if he does not understand where he came from. Hydraxon says that others have made the same claim, but he still has Hydraxon's skills, memories, and power, as well as his hatred for the Barraki. Hydraxon fights his way through Pridak's sharks and rams into Pridak himself. Pridak fights back, mentioning that Hydraxon cannot understand the hatred he has for being imprisoned for 90,000 [sic, 80,000] years. Pridak offers to reveal to Hydraxon who he really is, and Hydraxon gives him the chance to speak. Pridak explains that there was a Matoran named Dekar who wanted to destroy the Mask of Life, but the Barraki found him and took it from him. Dekar fled into the ocean with a dwindling air supply and was not seen again, and then Hydraxon appeared. Pridak concludes that the Mask of Life transformed Dekar into Hydraxon because it needed a new protector and the real Hydraxon was dead. Even after hearing this, Hydraxon does not care who he was before – only who he is now. He fights and defeats Pridak, then hauls him away.277

  • Ehlek is recaptured by Hydraxon and imprisoned.278
  • Kalmah is recaptured by Hydraxon and jailed.243
  • Hydraxon and Lesovikk encounter each other and clash on first meeting. Afterwards, they become allies in the effort to recapture the former prisoners of the Pit.54
