Nuparu acquired the aqua blaster blade when he was transformed by the Mask of Life from a Toa Inika into a Toa Mahri. Presumably, Nuparu's former laser drill was transformed into the aqua blaster blade. Nuparu presumably continued to use the aqua blaster blade on Spherus Magna.

Out-of-universe
No official visual depictions of Toa Mahri Nuparu have ever included a weapon identified as the aqua blaster blade; in them, Nuparu carries only a shield and a Cordak blaster. Despite this, written BIONICLE material, including the product description for the set, consistently mentions his carrying a weapon called the aqua blaster blade. In order to correct this discrepancy and give the aqua blaster blade a canon visual appearance, in 2008, the BIONICLE fan magazine KanohiJournal held a building contest (KanohiJournal Storyline Contest #1: Aqua Blaster Blade) approved by Greg Farshtey to come up with an official design. The winning design, created by BZPower member Terakk (a.k.a. Essenger), was canonized as the weapon's official appearance.
