The hooks1, 2, 3, 4 were a pair of hook-shaped tools that served as Gali's Toa tools when she was a Toa Mata. Gali used them to channel and focus her elemental power of water. They were not part of Gali's body, but were separate tools that she carried in her hands.5, 6, 7 The hooks allowed Gali to climb on slippery surfaces1, 2, 4, including slippery stones8, as well as rocks and cliffs9, 10. Gali could use them to grab onto rocks and cliffs by the waterfalls in and around Naho Bay.11, 12, 3
The hooks were created by Artakha, and Gali received them before her training on Daxia.13, 14 When Gali was transformed by energized protodermis into a Toa Nuva, the hooks presumably transformed into the aqua axes.
Notes
- Despite being made by Artakha, the hooks were not made of protosteel.15

Hands vs. Separate Tools
Some sources, arguably including the LEGO set 8533 Gali, indicate that Gali's hooks were her natural hands; she has been described as having hooked hands8 or hooked arms11, 12, 3. Canonically, however, the hook were separate tools that she carried.16, 17 Early story material such as LEGO Catalogs and BIONICLE Chronicles #1: Tale of the Toa stated Gali had hook-like hands. This was retconned when BIONICLE: Mask of Light was released and depicted her with human-like hands. The books had to be brought in line with the movies, and it was decided that it would not make sense for her to have hands as a Toa Nuva but not in her previous form.18
Some early material describes Gali as having one hooked hand; she has been described as having a hook arm19 or a hook9, 10.
